BMW brought a tradition back to life when it lined up at the Le Mans 24 Hours with an elaborately designed BMW M3 GTR Art Car by American artist Jeff Koons. Join The World's Best Iconic & Vintage
The M3 GTR was a surprise when it was released in 2001. Designed to race in American Le Mans under the GT category, this car won 7 out of the 10 events of the 2001 season, significantly beating the Porsche 911 GT3-R. After that season because of the change in the rules, it was removed from the competition.
As a kid I vividly remember seeing an M3 E46 Race Car while re-watching the 2000 Petit Le Mans as well as the 2001 24 Hours of Daytona. Bill Auberlen was an absolute legend behind the wheel. I never knew the M3 GTR got a road going version, but since about 11 were produce I HIGHLY doubt they'd ever get converted into the Most Wanted M3
Frau Sucht Mann Für Eine Nacht. For the homologation road car, see BMW M3 GTR (E46) For the road car, see BMW M3 (E46) The 2001 BMW M3 GTR GT (E46) is a race car developed by BMW based on their M3 E46. It competed during the 2001 racing season under both the BMW Motorsport and Team Schnitzer teams, with the car being entered in the GT class of The American Le Mans Championship and the European Le Mans Series.[1][2][3] It was originally fitted with a inline-six engine based on the engine of the standard E46 M3. The car first entered the GT class of the American Le Mans Series in 2000, in which it only took a single victory and was beaten on several occasions by the Porsche 911 GT3-R. A newly developed P60B40 V8 engine was quickly placed into the race car before the beginning of the racing 2001 season. It was developed alongside the BMW V10 engine that was used to power Williams Formula 1 cars during the 2001 F1 season. The old engine was ditched as BMW's engineers couldn't squeeze any more horsepower out of it. The new engine gave the BMW M3 GTR a competitive edge over the Porsche 911 GT3-R and allowed the M3 GTR to win seven out of the ten events in the GT category in the 2001 season. Porsche claimed during the 2001 ALMS season that BMW had violated the ALMS entry rules and the spirit of Gran Turismo. This was based on the fact that the V8 engine in the M3 GTR was not available in any road legal BMW M3. BMW produced 10 road going GTR models for sale after the 2001 ALMS season ended as the rules required that the entered cars must be placed on sale on two continents within twelve months of the season beginning. The ALMS rules were changed for the GT class heading into the 2002 season, and required that at least 100 units as well as 1,000 engines be built for a car to qualify. The revised rules forced BMW to pull the M3 GTR from the following American Le Mans Series season. However, it made its return to motorsport when the BMW-backed Schnitzer Motorsport team entered two M3 GTRs for the 2003 24 Hours of Nürburgring endurance race. The M3 GTR participated in the race for the following two years and scored a 1-2 victory for the team in 2004 and 2005. Its appearance is foreshadowed during the cutscene at the end of the mission "Follow The Law", a dark blue M3 GTR can be seen on the back of a flatbed truck in the Task Force's chop shop. As the player and Ana sneak around the chop shop, two officers can be overheard recounting how they acquired it; "You should've seen his face last night when I loaded it on the truck, thought he was gonna cry", to which another replies, "Ah, Frank would've loved that". It is later driven by Frank Mercer during the mission "Breaking The Law", in which he attempts to flee from the Palm City Police Department discovering his Task Force's shipment of cars. As the player and Ana's chase down Mercer, Lucas remarks that the PCPD will never be able to catch him and police chatter acknowledges that they've lost him whilst apprehending members of his Task Force. The BMW M3 GTR depicted on the box art of Need for Speed: Most Wanted features a different wheel design compared to the M3 GTR that appears in the title. The in-game model features a set of 20-spoke rims although the box-art model features a set of 5 spokes at the hub which split into 10 towards the wheel hoop. The M3 GTR is often erroneously associated to be Razor's car; even though it is the player's car. In Need for Speed: Most Wanted, the player can keep the M3 GTR at heat level 6 as long as they do not modify any of its visual attributes and use other cars for race events. In Need for Speed: Most Wanted, its livery has a Platinum Silver body with Le Mans Blue stripes.[6] In Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Need for Speed: Carbon, the M3 GTR has reduced performance in the career mode prologue sections to provide an easier introductory driving experience. In Need for Speed: Carbon, the player races against an M3 GTR in a Gold Ranked Canyon Duel Challenge Series event. In Need for Speed: Carbon, the M3 GTR is seen in the Gold Ranked Canyon Checkpoint Challenge Series event. In Need for Speed: ProStreet, Need for Speed: Undercover, Need for Speed: World, and Need for Speed (2015), the BMW M3 (E46) can be equipped with a body kit that resembles the M3 GTR. In Need for Speed (2015), a unique "Deluxe" M3 E46 based on the M3 GTR can be unlocked with purchase of the game's Deluxe Edition. In Need for Speed: Payback, a unique "Most Wanted" M3 E46 based on the M3 GTR could be unlocked when it was available as an abandoned car. The TV show Tuner Transformation created a replica of the BMW M3 GTR based on an E46 330Ci. In Need for Speed: Heat, the M3 GTR Legends Edition is incorrectly listed as a 2006 model year despite the specification appearing in all prior games to have only competed during the 2001 American, European, and Petit Le Mans Series. In Need for Speed: Heat, the M3 GTR Legends Edition is incorrectly listed as producing 345 bhp and 365 Nm of torque. An unused vinyl for the M3 GTR in Need for Speed: Most Wanted resembles the 2004 Schnitzer Motorsport M3 GTR livery, which won the 24 Hours Nürburgring endurance race that year. Development - Some content may have altered during development. The M3 GTR was the first car produced and shown for internal presentations of Criterion Games' Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012), but was not included as part of the release car line-up.[7] Gallery Need for Speed: Most WantedNeed for Speed: Most Wanted 5-1-0Need for Speed: Carbon(Custom)Need for Speed: World(Unreleased)Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012)(Hero Livery)Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012)(Urban Livery)Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012)(Street Livery)Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012)(Race Livery)Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012)(Abstract Livery)Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012)(Mobile)Need for Speed: No LimitsNeed for Speed: EdgeNeed for Speed: Edge(Promotional Image)Need for Speed: Heat(Legends Edition) References ↑ Website: (2004) Complete Archive of Chassis 001/2001Available at: ↑ Website: (2004) Complete Archive of Chassis 003/2001Available at: ↑ Website: (2004) Complete Archive of Chassis 004/2001Available at: ↑ Article: (2019) Under the Hood: Need for Speed Heat Car List. The BMW E46 M3 GTR came to life in February 2001 and was the first M3 in the history of the company to feature a V8 engine. The only reason that the BMW M3 GTR was made was to go along with the Le Mans rules stating that any vehicle raced must be produced in certain numbers for a certain length of time before the racing car starts its season. Since the Le Mans M3 GTR was a V8, the road car had to be, as fulfill this rule, BMW put 10 road going M3 GTR models on sale after the 2001 season, for €250,000 each. The road car used a slightly detuned version of the P60 rated at 380 horsepower at 7,000 rpm – complete with dry-sump lubrication and sharply canted radiator with hood venting. Power was transmitted through a racing style twin-disc clutch to a 6-speed manual gearbox and variable locking M M3 GTR featured an extensively stiffened chassis and a very sporty suspension setup derived from the race version. The BMW M3 GTR was dramatically lowered compared to the stock M3, additional bracing was fitted between the firewall and strut towers as well as between the rear shock towers. The extended and re-designed front and rear fascias and the rear wing optimized the aerodynamics of the M3 GTR by reducing E46 M3 GTR road car benefited from extensive weight reduction measures. The roof, rear spoiler, hood vents front and rear fascias were all constructed of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) – just as on the race version. The interior of the GTR was also reworked with an eye on lightweight. Recaro leather covered racing seats were added, the rear seat was removed and special M3 GTR sill plates finished off the interior it comes to cars there are many fan favorites spread across the 20 years of Need For Speed racing game history, the E46 M3 GTR is considered to this date one of the best cars to ever race in the popular video your opinion on the BMW M3 GTR?

Sometimes life rains happy little flowers. Take the other day, for example. There I was, having an otherwise normal day working out of my firm’s office in lovely Columbus, Ohio, and suddenly I wasn’t. Alien abduction can be the only explanation because there can’t be any logical reason I suddenly found myself in the race shop of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in Hilliard, Ohio, standing next to one of the most iconic race cars of all time: The BMW-powered McLaren F1 the pantheon of sports cars, the Gordon Murray-designed McLaren F1 sits at the highest step of any possible pedestal; it’s so iconic, it’s virtually mythic. And the race car that was born from the road car project (and begrudgingly by Murray at that) still exists as some sort of almost unbelievable footnote, a seemingly effortless tilting of the race world’s axis that hasn’t really been replicated since. It was a car so extraordinary that it won the overall victory at Le Mans on its first try, when it did so in 1995. The BMW S70/2 V12 engine was the beating heart of the F1 GTR and was used by BMW in the F1, the V12 LM and LMR Le Mans prototypes (and rather humorously in the one-off X5 Le Mans built to celebrate BMW’s overall victory at Le Sarth in 2000). The 6-liter motor made 618-hp and 480 lb-ft of torque and redlined at 7500rpm. Ironically, Le Mans GT1 class rules limited the amount of horsepower the race motors could make, so courtesy of an air restrictor, the F1 GTR’s engine actually made slightly less power (closer to 600-hp) than the road car. This slight limitation was more than compensated by the dramatically more aggressive aero package and lower overall weight on the race car, as evidenced by it achieving mph on the Mulsanne Straight when it arrived at Le Mans in particular car, chassis #17R, was campaigned at Le Mans in 1996 by BMW Motorsports (in conjunction with their Italian partner, Bigazzi Team SRL) and finished 8th overall (and 6th in the GT1 class). Nelson Piquet, Johnny Cecotto, and Danny Sullivan shared driving duties. It’s now part of BMW North America’s BMW Classics collection and is maintained in pristine running condition by the mechanical wizards of BMW Team RLLR. And it’s most assuredly no museum queen; it last bared its teeth at this year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca under the hot shoe of BMW factory driver Bill Auberlen. (To get an idea of what this beast sounds like from the cockpit, check out this clip on Axis of Oversteer.)The F1 GTR shares the iconic scissor doors and majority of internal mechanicals with the road car but in race car trim is about as raw and purposeful as you’d imagine. The F1 GTR also shares the road car’s central seating position, with two vestigial jump seats positioned on either side and slightly rearward. Getting in through the lattice of roll cage and into the central seat takes more than a few acrobatics, but once I pretzeled thusly, the fit of the cockpit and vista over the car’s snout feels perfect; the physical presence of the giant BMW V12 behind my head is palpable, and the aluminum shifter is perfectly at hand. Come on guys, let me fire this monster up! I think I may have blinded someone with my grin. And since a sister car, chassis #21, sold at a Gooding & Co. auction in 2014 for $ I was really glad I didn’t ding it getting in or all wonderful things must be, my time in the car was all too short (though I think I was a bit more graceful folding myself out). But what an amazing experience with an absolutely astounding piece of automotive and racing history. One I’ll never forget.(Extra special thanks to Steve Dickson and Brian Marks from RLLR for making the alien abduction possible.)[Source: KanonOnCars]
Poza graczami i fanami BMW o GTR pamięta mało kto – a szkoda, bo to zarazem jedyna odmiana M3 E46, którą wyposażano w silnik V8. Fot. Zakres zmian obejmował montaż ABS-u i kontroli trakcji (niedozwolonych w ALMS) i zastosowanie w układzie dolotowym zwężek o średnicy 32 mm, zamiast stosowanych wcześniej zwężek o średnicy 30,4 mm. A to pozwoliło na podniesienie mocy z dotychczasowych ok. 450 KM do ponad 500 (wersja drogowa miała ok. 350-380 KM). Pomimo dość zaawansowanego wieku konstrukcji, pojazd wygrał maratony w klasie prototypów w 2004 i 2005 r. fot. Young Timers Garage
